I first went to the Marovo Lagoon, Solomon Islands, in 2006, after becoming newly certified for scuba diving. I found a pristine tropical environment with a big problem. The villagers had very little access to healthcare. It occurred to me that with my medical community and the resources available in the first world that I might be able to make a difference in the healthcare of this community. I envisioned sustainable change through infrastructure development and engagement at the local level.
I am so proud of what has been accomplished by the hands of so many since Marovo Medical Foundation was started. We now have solar power for the hospital, screens on windows, ceiling fans, and a beautiful operating theater that did not previously exist. We have included local healthcare workers and nurses on our tours and incorporated the local community to help care for the hospital. We have come so far, yet there is so much more to be accomplished.
We would love to see you on a future tour!
